First Trimester Recap – the good, the bad and the TMI

In case you missed it… we’re expecting! I’m super excited to share this journey with you guys, so if you’re interested in all the gross details of the first trimester of pregnancy keep going –  tmi warning in advance!

There is also a video that goes along with this post, like a read-a-long, but in my annoying voice, how cute is that?!

I figured weekly updates would just be too much and not a lot changes week to week so I’m just going to do trimester recaps. Plus, who wants to really hear me talk about vomiting every weekend? Don’t tempt me guys, I’ll do it.

If you’re interested in how we found out or details on prepregnancy symptoms, check out the other pregnancy announcement video/blog post “More Babies?!”

This is just going to get into all of the TMI details of my first trimester, including symptoms, must haves, weight gain…. Okay, let’s jump right in;

SYMPTOMS

  • Bloating, this was so bad the first few weeks. Everything was so tight and just uncomfortable, even sleeping on my stomach hurt.
  • Holy Nipple pain, I mentioned this before in my announcement video, and to be honest I don’t know that it this is something I would have related to pregnancy had I not experienced it before with one of the girls, although I can’t remember which one, I do remember taking a shower and the water felt like hail just hammering my nipples. I never get boob pain as a PMS symptom, so this was weird and freaking painful.
  • Speaking of boobs… like whoa. There isn’t much else to say.
  • Fatigue, I remember major fatigue with the first, I don’t remember it at all with Waverly – maybe because I was chasing a toddler, but man, I am just so fatigued every day and it doesn’t help that I kicked coffee, or the baby kicked coffee (that was not my choice.) I drank 1 cup of coffee every day with Waverly and maybe that’s why I didn’t have this extreme fatigue, but I can’t even smell coffee. I have had some iced coffee here and there and that seems to be ok but hot coffee is a huge turn off and it is so painful.
  • Headaches, Nausea & Vomiting; I’m lumping all these together because they all kind of go hand in hand, it’s nonstop for me. This started before I got my BFP (that’s lingo for big fat positive) which was week 4 actually. Week 7 was the absolute hardest, pretty much nonstop nausea all day, dry heaving in the morning and full on vomiting in the evenings. I had some vomiting and a ton of dry heaving with my other 2 girls so I’m not super surprised, but I don’t remember it being all day and I usually threw up in the mornings only. I had Chris laughing so hard last night with the dry heaves, he said I sounded like a tennis player.  We will have to see how bad this gets. I had an extreme allergic reaction to anti-nausea medication before so I’m not sure if I want to go down that path and try a different med,  but it’s pretty bad right now and I can tell I am getting dehydrated because my lips and skin this morning specifically felt very dry and I’ve been having issues with my contacts which is usually a tell take sign I need to up my water. It’s just hard to keep it in. I did try adding lemon to my water today, so we’ll see if that helps. The headaches could be hormonal or coffee withdrawal, I’m not sure which.
  • Sleeping; my sleeping has been so bad. I’m peeing like crazy at night and every little thing wakes me up when I finally do fall asleep which takes forever. Plus, I have this weird weight in my uterus so back sleeping, which is my preferred style, is uncomfortable. It’s hard to explain unless you have had kids before, but once your baby gets a certain size they say not to lay on your back because the weight compresses your spine, but up until it gets to that point when you do lay on your back you feel this weight spread or pressure and its noticeable and super familiar and I’m a bit freaked out like why am I feeling this pressure so early. I actually started freaking out it may have been a litter instead of just 1 but doctor confirmed we are just 1 baby, so I do feel a little better. Maybe it’s because I’m old I feel things different or because it’s my 3rd and my body is just like all stretched out, I don’t know, I did hear you show much faster in subsequent pregnancies so that does make sense.
  • Bleeding; With Waverly I had a few days of implantation spotting, which I did mistake for a light period. I never once bled with Oakley. This time I had full on bleeding every day until almost 12 weeks. They ended up telling me I had a subchoronic hematoma, which is a pocket of blood between the placenta and the uterus. Apparently, that happens in some pregnancies.

FOOD AVERSIONS/CRAVINGS

Food Aversions; other aversions have been basically everything, I’m not necessarily craving anything, but I am just turned off by so much that it’s hard to find something appetizing. I have been leaning towards a lot of cold/light foods, pasta salad and potato salad, cold cereal, I had a grilled ham and cheese from this sketchy corner mom and pop grill and it was literally the best thing I had eaten in such a long time. I’ve also been eating a lot of fruit, but it’s such a struggle to find food when your gut is in shambles 24/7.

WEIGHT GAIN / MATERNITY CLOTHES

No weight gain yet, but I do think I lost weight and then maybe I gained that back in different areas because I weigh the same, but I look different if that makes sense. So, I think my fat is just relocating.

Haven’t needed anything special yet, still able to button the jeans although they are tight.

WORKING OUT

Yea that’s a hard no right now. I was doing Barre pretty regularly to get in bikini shape, but truth be told this entire first trimester has been survival mode. That sounds really bad – and truthfully nausea and vomiting doesn’t happen to everyone. I know 3 other girls pregnant right now, all close in due date and only 2 of the 4 of us had it bad.

MUST HAVES

  • Phone Apps
    • Baby Center
    • What to Expect
  • Pregnancy Journal
    • I got an absolutely stunning pregnancy journal off Etsy from Ally @ AMK Designs, it has week by week tracking pages which is ideal for remembering, because, well you know pregnancy brain – and its spiral bound so it’s so much easier to write and take with me than those typical thick baby books. I love it so much, its neutral and just a true ‘must have’ for anyone who loves tracking and journaling. I will link her shop in the description below, she has a ton of other types of journals too, you guys need to check her shop out.
  • Anti-nausea stuff; Guys. I tried it all and nothing worked for me unfortunately. In my first trimester recap I will let you know all the things I tried but truthfully nothing really helped me at all.
    • Allergy to anti-nausea meds (dystonic reaction)
    • Ginger candy, ginger tea
    • Lemon drops
    • Lemonheads
    • B6/Unisom
    • Anti-nausea seltzer water
  • SPF (to ward off the maternity mask!)
  • Throw up Bucket (this is a car MUST)
  • Water Bottle
  • Pregnancy Pillow (just using the girls pillow pets right now)
  • Pregnancy Tea

Well guys, there you have it. All the juicy details of my first trimester. Not super exciting I would say, lots of the same, sick, backache, weird pain, sick, sick, back ache. Mostly common stuff that all newly pregnant gals experience.

I hope you guys enjoyed! Next week I plan to do the gender reveal! We actually found out very early with this one, at 10 weeks!
