How to Survive Kids being Home for Spring Break (Hint: It Involves Lots of Alcohol)

If you’re a parent, you know that spring break can be a trying time. It’s a week-long period where your kids are home from school, and suddenly, you’re expected to be a full-time entertainer. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love my kids, but sometimes you need a break. That’s why I’m here to give you some tips on how to survive spring break with your sanity intact. And, of course, some alcohol.

Step 1: Make a Plan

The first step to surviving spring break is to make a plan. You can’t just wing it and hope for the best. Talk to your kids and find out what they want to do during the week. Do they want to go to the beach? Visit a theme park? Have a movie marathon at home? Once you know what they want to do, you can start making a schedule. And, more importantly, you can figure out when you’re going to have time to yourself to cry in your pantry because there are no snacks left, the house is trashed and its only 11:27am on Monday.

Step 2: Keep the Kids Busy

The key to surviving spring break is to keep your kids busy. The more activities you have planned, the less time they have to complain about being bored. And, let’s be real, when kids are bored, they get into trouble and their annoying. So, plan some fun activities for them. Take them to the park, have a picnic, or even a scavenger hunt. You can even have them help you with some spring cleaning but be strategic about it, like “I hid a dollar at the bottom of this pile of dirty laundry and whoever puts all the colors in this basket and whites in this basket will find it!” Not sure anyone will fall for that, but worth a try…

Step 3: Incorporate Alcohol

Now, let’s talk about the alcohol. Obviously this isn’t going to work for everyone, some people don’t drink and some people have day jobs so your going to have to figure out what works for you but we all know you’re likely going to need it. After a long day of entertaining the kids, you deserve a break. So, why not make yourself a nice, refreshing drink? I recommend some version of a  Margarita. It’s the perfect spring break drink.

Here’s what you’ll need for a basic Marg, check the bottom for 10 out of the box Marg ideas!

  • 1 1/2 oz. Tequila
  • 1 oz. Lime Juice
  • 1/2 oz. Triple Sec
  • Salt
  • Ice

Combine the tequila, lime juice, and triple sec in a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a salt-rimmed glass filled with ice. Voila! You now have the perfect spring break drink.

Step 4: Take a Break

Lastly, and most importantly, take a break. It’s okay to take some time for yourself. Hire a babysitter for a few hours, have a girls’ night, go lay in the yard, or even just go to your designated hiding spot and stare at the wall in the dark. You deserve it.

Now that you know how to survive spring break, go out there and conquer it. And, of course, don’t forget the alcohol. Cheers to a successful spring break!
